NFL- Colin Kaepernick vs YSU Ma’lik Richmond

Nationwide the name Colin Kaepernick incites a lot of emotion in people. Where I live locally, the name Ma’lik Richmond does the same. This is a topic that I’ve wanted to address for a long time. I’ve touched on it briefly on social media, but never really went in depth. Like most things, my thought process on this might not be “in line” with the masses on EITHER side of the equation. Which is probably why you’re reading this in the first place.

I’m not going to debate whether or not either situation is “right”, because unfortunately most times in life that’s actually IRRELEVANT. Plus I normally don’t look at things from an “emotional” point of view, I just use logic. I’ll begin with Kaepernick, since that situation has been going on the longest. People have differences of opinion about him kneeling (and not standing), during the National Anthem, in efforts to bring awareness to unarmed people of color being killed by police. Since the off season he has been out of a job. Personally I think Kaepernick is a “bum” at quarterback. His back to back years of dismal performance of my fantasy football teams has strengthened that biased I have against him. If you cost me money, it’s hard for me to actually LIKE you. With that being said, I don’t think he’s the BOTTOM “bum” in the NFL. He’s probably better than at least 10 STARTING QB’s, and definitely better than NON-starters. So I think it’s safe to say that his “unemployment” is NOT about FOOTBALL, but about his “stance”.

Now Ma’lik Richmond is a player on the YSU football team who is causing quite a stir locally. Not to get too deep into specifics, he was convicted of rape in high school, served time, and now wants to join the YSU for college football. Apparently this feeling was MUTUAL, because YSU allowed him on the squad. That’s until some of the public caught wind of this and started a petition to not have Richmond represent YSU on the football field. As signatures of the petition grew YSU issued a statement saying that Richmond would NOT be allowed to participate in football. Though they stopped short of completely kicking him OFF the squad. Whether you feel it’s right or wrong, YSU felt the “backlash” wasn’t worth the “reward” of Richmond playing.

With Kaepernick, whether the NFL owners feel the backlash isn’t worth the reward or THEY simply flat out don’t want him on their team because of him kneeling during the national anthem in efforts to bring awareness to unarmed people of color being killed by police (I keep saying this so that we DON’T overlook the REAL problem), the bottomline is that he’s NOT on a team. I’ve seen people in the public, who support Kaepernick’s stance, say that NFL players should “sit out” in support of Kaepernick. Personally I look at this as a “cop-out”. First off, you don’t know a player’s financial situation to be suggesting what THEY should do. Plus unlike the NBA, they don’t have guaranteed contracts in the NFL, so they have A LOT to lose (as Kaepernick is seeing). But if you support Kaepernick’s stance, what do YOU have to lose by NOT watching the NFL this season? What do YOU have to lose by NOT going to NFL games? You really have NOTHING to lose, yet I’m seeing so many of his supporters “excited” about the start of NFL football. If you wonder why people don’t take your “concerns” seriously, look no further. Like I expressed earlier, I think Kaepernick is a bum at quarterback. And I don’t view his stance in any HIGHER regard than I would if YOU did the same thing. But if someone is being “blackballed” for wanting to bring awareness to people who look like me being killed, the least I could do is NOT watch NFL football this year. Which is EXACTLY what I plan on doing. Yes, I’ll miss out of my annual fantasy football league. Yes, I’ll have to figure out what to do with my Sundays. A SMALL inconvenience for a LARGER cause, if you ask me. Those petitioners were willing to “sacrifice” going to YSU football games for what they BELIEVED in, but you’d rather just be “fake mad” on the internet and not be taken seriously? Good luck…

Credit strategy: Discover Card Owners

This is something I used to do ALL of the time, that I had kinda strayed away from. Well actually I guess I DIDN’T “stray away”, I just forgot about it because my memory is terrible *kanye shrug*

If you have a Discover card, like most cards, it allows you to earn “points” on purchases. Typically 1% cash back, and then quarterly they have different categories that allow you to earn 5% cash back. So depending one how you use your card, you can stack up points fairly quickly. I also try to pay most of my utilities with my credit card. The downside is that most utilities charge a fee for using your credit card, so you have to make sure it’s beneficial to you and not COSTING you money just to earn points. For example, my gas company charges $1.67 per credit card payment. So with the 1% cash back, my bill needs to be at least $167 for using my credit card to benefit me. Also if you don’t pay your balance off in FULL every month, the interest will also cancel out any cash back you earn paying utilities bills with a credit card.

So let’s get down to it. Let’s say you’re doing all of this and accumulating cash back. There are several ways to “redeem” your money:
A). Receive a CHECK for your earned cash
B). Get a “bill credit” to help pay off your outstanding balance
C). Have the money direct deposited into your bank account
D). Buy gift/e-certificates directly off the Discover site
We’re going to go with option “D”. Now if you buy gift/e-certificates with your earned cash back you’ll AUTOMATICALLY receive an extra $5. So if you buy an $20 gift/e-certificate from Starbucks, you’ll receive a $25 gift/e-certificate. That’s enough to get an extra pinch of sugar in your latte, with their expensive a$$! Anyways, the REAL “deal” is from Enterprise Rent-A-Car. If you buy a $20 gift/e-certificate they will DOUBLE it to $40! Whenever I would travel I’d use these or even when my truck was in the shop. Plus with each rental you’d ALSO earn points with Enterprise towards discounts or free rentals.

So basically for doing something you were going to do ANYWAYS (paying your bills), you can earn free money that will DOUBLE in value whenever you need to rent a vehicle. All while earning points towards FREE rentals with Enterprise for buying gift/e-certificates with the FREE money you received paying your bills. See how that works out? Your welcome… *wink*

Cell Phone Review: LG G6

A few months ago a wrote a “review” (https://knowriskspeaks.com/index.php/2017/04/10/samsung-galaxy-s8-vs-lg-g6-review/ ) on the Samsung Galaxy 8 vs LG G6, but it SHOULD have been called a PREVIEW because I hadn’t actually PURCHASED either phone. During my write-up I mentioned that though I felt the Galaxy 8 was a slightly better phone, the phone I would most likely get is the LG G6. Well its been GOT!

For starters, because it means something, the phone is BEAUTIFUL. And I’m honest enough to admit the “cosmetics” are one of the factors I include in buying a cell phone. It’s kinda like dating to me. A woman’s beauty isn’t enough for me to like her, she needs more attributes. But you can have all the “attributes” in the world, I’m still NOT dating you if you’re ugly *kanye shrug* Anyways…Like I was saying, this phone is beautiful. From the glass back, to the subtle sky blue tint, to the nearly bezel-less edge to edge front display, the LG G6 is a thing of beauty.

When you hold this phone, you can tell it was made with all premium materials. It feels sturdy in your hand, and despite the large 5.8 in screen, it does not come across as “too big”. It is water-resistant with a IP68 rating, which means that it can be submerged in water for 30 minutes at a depth of up to five feet. So then next time you drop you phone in the toilet, just reach in there and get it. You’re disgusting by the way…

One thing I DON’T like about the phone is the speaker. Not for its volume output, but for its LOCATION on the bottom of the phone besides the USB C-type charging port.

It makes it EASY to accidentally cover up with you hand while recording video. So if you’re not careful, you may take the perfect video but notice the audio is “muffled” because your had the speaker covered. Frustrating to say the least.

One of the highlights of this phone is it’s CAMERA. Now it captures pictures slightly SLOWER that what I feel is ideal, but I’m sure that can be fixed with future software updates. Besides that, the LG G6 has an excellent shooter. It has a DUAL camera set up to allow you to take “wide-angle” pictures. After experiencing this, I’m not sure if I EVER want to phone that DOESN’T have a “wide-angle” option. My other current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S 7 Edge which had arguably the BEST camera on the market…until now. The LG G6 images are a bit more sharp and vibrant. Here’s a sample of the two phones taking the same picture:

Lastly, I didn’t purchase this phone the “traditional” way, through a carrier. Whenever I purchase a phone that has been released several months ago, I use https://swappa.com . Here you can purchase used cell phones (tablets, ipads, & computers also) in GOOD & MINT condition from sellers all over the country. They also have NEW phones at drastically discounted rates. I purchased a NEW LG G6 for $400 (that includes tax & shipping costs), this is normally a $650 phone. In this Apple/Samsung dominated cell phone world, the LG G6 is the best top-tier phone no one will buy. Get familiar…
